Do Flat Top Pistons work? PDF Print E-mail
I can see that the flat tops would work, but does the groove
need a flat top?

ANSWER:
I like a flat top piston because it provides a direct unobstructed flame path. If I can get the desired compression using a flat top piston that’s he route I take. Sometimes it becomes necessary to run a dome piston to achieve the desired compression; I believe that’s the only benefit dome pistons provide. To be on the safe side I stay between 10:1 to 10.5:1 compression when using pump gas. With grooved heads and 10:1 compression even a work horse like a tractor or a work truck should provide the benefits of improved efficiency with out detonation. I am testing higher compression ratios; I hope to be able to run 11:1 to 1 or higher safely on pump gas. Time will tell.
