I then texture the intake ports with what look like screw threads. I call them Powre Lynz, to better vaporize the fuel.

Mike, Can you tell us more about the Powre Lynz, how it's done? Any pictures?

The tool resembles a tap except the threads are concentric, not spiraled. The tip is domed to get into tighter corners, and the shank is 1/4" to fit into my die grinder. It utilizes a 20 thread pitch. It's just flame hardened so it does great on aluminum, but not so well on iron heads.

The idea is that the threaded texture does 3 things:
1) breaks larger fuel droplets into smaller droplets as they hit the heated threaded walls
2) acts like a wick, holding liquid fuel and allowing it to vaporize into the air stream
3) the heated walls have increased surface area to impart more thermal energy to the fuel, promoting better vaporization.

Good for a 30% increase in economy with stock calibrations, and up to 100% with a wide band custom cal. Furthermore, I did this on a VW VR-6 and the poor kid grenaded his transmission first time out due to the phenominal increase in torque!

Thanks Mike, The picture reminds me of a CNC ported head, 30% increase in economy is great!

www.FuelEconomyTips.com is sponsoring a '97 Saturn in the '06 Tour de Sol mileage competition and I get to do much of the work to the car. Many of the external engine mods are based on an entry from '05 (a different '97 Saturn) that got an official 99 mpg, an unofficial 109 mpg, and would have gotten 221 mpg if the car's owner (Fran) hadn't pointed out an error in their testing methods. I will be adding the Grooves and Powre Lynz to the engine's head, and a MegaSquirt fuel-only interceptor card to see if we can't get an official 150+ mpg out of it. This is going to be fun!

Mike, That's awesome, are you serious 150+ MPG! What fuel/air ratio are you running?

Yet to be determined. The car is in Elgin, IL and I'm in PA. I will be getting things together and ready, then the car's owner will be shooting down here over some weekend where I'll yank the head and get it back together again. I'll then proceed to get as much bolted on as time allows. The custom cal will most likely have to wait for another weekend trip where he'll drive it on the stock ECU for awhile.

I have an old chassis dyno and a 4-gas analyzer. I plan on just running the engine while tuning on the dyno for best results and let the air-fuel ratio land where it may.

Any links to pictures of that car? The Tour is a prime event to showcase the Groove.

Good luck this year!

The Grooves are among a list of improvements. It's going to take an awful lot of work and many different mods to reach that 150 mpg.

As for a picture, the only thing I currently have access to is:

Click on something and click on "View Larger Image".
