Somender,

     To let you know - John John (JJ) took Western Canadian Championship on 85 Yamaha with Somender's 5 groove set-up.  Shaving head 10 thou out-performed 3 groove.  Jet sizing way down - performance way up.  4 stroke Honda was hole shotting 90% of every race.    Thank you very much for helping us out.  Happy New Year & best wishes to you and yours.  kp / whitecourt

heres a head thats to suit my car and it has next to no squish area, does this mean it cant be grooved beyond a tiny slot?

This is what I'd do.



However, with a chamber like that (with the spark plug perfectly in the center of the chamber) I'll bet that produces a pretty quick and efficient burn already. I guess it couldn't hurt, however.

What car is this head from? I have a 20 valve VW Passat 1.8 turbo engine and was wondering if this is a 20 valve head as well.

This is a 20v engine and Its from a toyota Levin ae111, only available in Japan and Sth Africa. It sure isnt what its in now though. I am currently using the earlier engine that came out of the front wheel drive ae101 but I converted it to rear wheel drive and I have it in my ae86

I found some pics of the head that's most likely in my car. Based on the pics, it seems to be more groove friendly than the one shown in these pics. Would you agree and would you say that, given the design, the best approach would be three grooves?

it looks suprisingly simular to the earlier toyota head. What you have draw looks right, be very carefull though as you dont want to take much material out and go too far. Perhaps dummy fit a gasket into place and then make an outline for you to use as a guide on how far to go?

Remember, the piston top is part of the combustion chamber too. With a five-valve head, you have a very efficient head to start with.

efficient yes but not as efficient as a good 4V head, afterall after a certain engine size a 4V head will outpeform a 5V head in all non forced induction situations

the pic above is 4age20V Silvertop, while the first 2 pics are 4age20V Blacktop...

i've done for Blacktop... + some other mod with stock cams, i'm at 147whp...
not bad for 1587cc engine...

Actually, the lower picture is of a VW 1.8 turbo cylinder head. I'm going to be doing the work soon and so any input you have would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All !

Even in a 5 valve head ~ compression only starts to form after the 3 inlet valves shut the ports tight ! Once the combustion chamber starts to form all forms of " Tumble and Swirl " motions start to degenerate separating the fuel particles in the charge into dew ~ The small bits of squish pads are the only forms of activation nearing tdc to cause some form of mix ups in the stagnant charge !

5 valve heads can push a little more air- fuel through the ports to arrive with a more denser charge to derive a little more power ! 5 valve heads have very poor water flow around the combustion chamber ~ Hence they tend run much hotter and the valves end up picking most of the heat than the aluminum ?

Looking at the first Photo ~ The carbon ash spilt all over the chamber and the valves show poor erratic burning ~ Even a tiny channel through the tiny squish pad will induce the much needed turbulence close to the igniter to achieve a blue flame spread across the chamber !

Quite a few lads have seen the changes coming from idle to infinity in FZR 5 valve heads !

Grooved turbulence has nothing to do with the number of Valves or Spark plug locations !???

Time the World woke up to new ideas which matter ~ i have yet to see any other single mod ~ that can bring about such a big change in drive-ability and low end torque minus the " ping and knock " and carbon formations ! Some call it ~ Silk Smooth !

Happy times ~ i can only see a up hill road ahead ! With plenty of " Road & Mental " Blocks ...............
