Does it matter if the groove is on the exhaust or intake side?
I put 4 small grooves offset 90deg from eachother. I saw a picture of your grooves in an engine with the grooves all around, so I figured I'd start with 4. The spark plug is in the center of my head. I see on this updated site it suggests just a single groove. How does 1groove vs 4 grooves affect things?
I tried it and I didn't notice any difference. Today I had to take it appart again to get a towel out... long story. So I'm going to enlarge the exhaust side groove and remove the head gasket to raise compression.

Somender has an image of 13 grooves, I think. It may be that yours works well with 8. A single groove is the suggested starting number for assymetrical spark placement. The central position of your engine might benefit from more grooves, not less.
